Release time:
2022-02-28
Based on the protection of the land, the community and the wine industry, and the blessing of future generations of mankind, the California Wine Association launches a series of activities with the theme of sustainable development every April-Down to Earth Month (Down to Earth Month).

This year, on the occasion of the 11th "Down to Earth" (return to the earth), the California Senate officially passed by State Senators Bill Dodd (Bill Dodd and Mike McGuire) and State Representative Cecily Resolution 88 (SCR 88), proposed by Cecilia Aguiar-Curry, proclaims April as "California Wine: Back to Earth Month."
For a month, the California Winery and Appellation Association will highlight the industry's growing, winemaking, and business practices by hosting a variety of fun, interactive events, including wine tastings, vineyard walks, sustainability tours, and more sustainable development outcomes.
"As the fourth largest wine region, California has pursued the most comprehensive and widely adopted sustainability program in the world," said Robert P. Koch, president and CEO of the California Wine Society. The perfect time for our California member wineries, whether you’re visiting the winery in person for a tasting tour or attending some virtual experiential events.”
The California wine industry is a global leader in sustainable wine growing and is known to:
80% of California wines (255 million cases) are produced by 178 certified sustainability wineries;
55% of California vineyards are certified sustainable;
2,402 certified California sustainable wine plantation farms covering 204,857 acres, or 33% of California wine grape acreage;
Additionally, 22% of California wine vineyards are certified by other sustainability programs, including Fish-Friendly Agriculture Certification, Lodi Rules, Napa Green and Sustainable Practices (SIP Certified), and some vineyards are also Certified for multiple projects. While sustainable practices may include elements such as organic, biodynamic, and regenerative agriculture, sustainability is broad and includes water, efficient use of energy, employee relations, community engagement, and more.
